From today, 1st February 2016, the new rules relating to operating a Right to Rent Check come into force, and the government, in its wisdom, is making failure to adhere to the regime an offence punishable by a stiff fine (there is talk of it being criminalised).
Whether landlords think this is reasonable, to have to fulfil border check functions, or not, it is something that we have to live with. That’s a theme I commented on in an earlier post: “Now we are Border Guards, both Doctors and Landlords alike” (https://leicestershireproperty.com/2015/11/10/now-we-are-border-guards-both-doctors-and-landlords-alike/)
Here’s the official Government guidance: https://www.gov.uk/check-tenant-right-to-rent-documents
The rules are being touted as easy to follow, but we have investigated them fully and there are many pitfalls. My advice?: use a quality agent who really does understand the nuts and bolts, don’t take a chance. Northwood Leicester has the issue well and truly built into its DNA, so contact Hannah Neale if you need advice.
